November & December Projects Update Part 1

November and December are two of the busiest month for Leo Club of Penang (City) to make ours plans, ideas, suggestions & projects into realization. Leo Club of Penang (City) have organize various projects and activities during this festive months to foster mutual understanding and improve the spirit among our club members, sister clubs & other leos.In late October (reported in November), we celebrated RCC Ong's Birthday at Daorae Korean Barbeque together with 2 visiting leos from the region. The celebration is themed in conjunction with Halloween.Our club members not only organized and attended our own project in November, we have also attended Leo Club of Chung Ling & Pei Yuan's Joint Community Service at the I-Care Centre located at Kampar. The purpose of this project is to promote service to the community and also to support of sister club's projects and activities.While in early December, Leo Club of Penang (City) has attended Region 1 Joint Organized "Tree 4 Life" Tree Planting Project at SJK(C) Kong Min. Our members have taken this initiative to participate in the tree planting that is in line with the International President's mission that is to plant a million trees.The tree planting project is organized in conjunction of the International Leo Day & a cake cutting ceremony were held as well.At the 10th of December, we celebrated our 34th Club Anniversary at Stone Bay Restaurant. As the oldest Omega Leo Club in the District, we are proud to be the members of the club & committees. We express our gratitude to our IPP Vincent Khor for organizing this meaningful event to mark the success of Leo Club of Penang (City) for the continuing serving to the Community for 34 years.The day after the Anniversary, our club members attended and participated Region 1 Bowling Competition organized by New Century Lions Club of Penang Island. they have archived first runner-up in group competition and our President Leo Teoh Him Keat had achieved the highest score for the individual category.In mid-December during the holiday break, we sent our representative Leo Lim Chien Ming to attend the District Leo Camp organized at Cameron Highlands. According to him, it was a good experience for him and he had fun during the camp. He has made the club proud as he have won the best camper for the camp.Last but no least, our members have also attended the Press Conference for the Region 1 Ring Tab Collection project. The press conference was successfully carried out and the photo below shows the total ring tab collected during the collection period.To be continue...

August Updates Part 2

Starting of the Mid-August, Our members and committees again attended various function and events.We sent off two YE departing from Penang.

We hope that they enjoyed their stay in Penang with us and hope that they would share their experience about culture, believes and heritage with their friends, family and as a mini ambassadors among themselves to introduce our country Malaysia. As I am writing this on Malaysia Day, Happy Malaysia Day to everyday!

Our Vice President Billy Loo have taken up commitment to organize a Bicycle Tour to foster relationship among members and committees. Although there are a lot of new members who just joined the club, they are very open to us and able to accept the ways and the believes of the club. Thus, the obligations that usually required to abolished is not needed and everyone had fun during the tour!

During the tour, some of us cycled from town where we picked up our bicycle to Shan's Children Home situated near Mount Erskine. While others in the car, escort the bicycle team to the Shan's Children Home to safety and also taking care of their personal belongings. We had experience a great deal of fun with the members as well as the children in the children house. We challenged the children to make a malaysia flag with recycle materials we provided. They actually produced a very good quality flag thanks to our Mr & Mrs Art, Mr Lee Min Ho & his helper Miss Roxanne.

Prizes are given to those who draw good flags and sweets are distributed as well for those who are not so fortunate. It's a win-win situation where everyone wins!

Our visits ended with a group photo with the children in front of the home!

At the end of the month, Our committees and members attended the Omega & Alpha Joint Installation and Induction. Our committees are finally installed and new members are finally inducted!

August Updates Part 1

The Board of Leo Club of Penang (City) has started all out into organizing and attending projects in August. We have organized various events and attended installations and inductions throughout the District and also our sister club's installation and inductions function. The month of August is truly a month of meeting new friends and knowing each other and also a little bit of adventure to all our members and committees.

Earlier on the month, we have organized the "District 308B2 YE & Leo Camp". It has proven our cooperation and integrity among other clubs and club team members has lead to a success in organizing the 3 days 2 night camp. The camp was initiated by the Youth Camp Chairperson, DC Hng and we have taken up this challenge in a short notice. The Organizing Chairperson Leo Teoh Shaw Jhee has taken the lead as well as the challenge to organizing this event and the result was fantastic!

Next our club committees & members have attended the "Visit to Ramakrishna" & "DG Shawn's Inauguration Dinner".

The visits have been fruitful as we have learned how to love and care for the orphanages. It is very important that in today society, many children are neglected and love is much needed by the growing children. Attending DG's Inauguration also gave us chance to experience and witness the ceremony of District Governor Shawn Lee and a chance for the committees to social and to understand the DG more.

Our President, Teoh Him Keat and PP Ch'ng Kok Sheng had went all the way to Kelantan to witness "Leo Club of KBC & Chung Cheng's Joint Installation".

During the time in Kelantan, they had the chance to visit the Lion Club of Kota Bahru's Down Syndrome Centre in Kelantan.

The trip is fruitful as they are not only able to improve the relationship between the club's twinning sister club, they have also have a hands on experience on how to care for the down syndrome.Finally, committees and members have attend more installations and inductions as well as formations.In the southern region, we have attended Serdang Leo's & Metro Methodist College Formation.

In the northern region, We attended Ipoh Unity's Installation.

Our committees and members have certainly enjoyed the trip down to Ipoh and KL to attend functions and projects that could create bonds between the club and foster new friendship among the leo throughout the district.

Dear Readers,
Apologies for late update of the July's Projects & Events attended by our Club, Leo Club of Penang (City). As we all know, every club is currently undergoing administration changes.

Let us proceed. In the Early July. Our BOD for 2011-2012 have been trying their best to keep up with the projects organized on the island and outside the state as well. The purpose of this is to build relationship and understanding among other club's BOD and to socialize with Leos & Lions.

We have also attended a Durian Party with Children Protection Society. We have indeed made alot of laughter during the day to the children in the CPS. We donated a TV we collected from the 3R Project earlier that day at Taman Free School

MAD ECO Parade at Penang Times Square

On the 5th and 6th of December 2010, in conjunction with the International Leo Day event, Region 1 Leo Club organized the Leo M.A.D ECO Parade at Penang Times Square. The main event is the parade around the beautiful Georgetown city and there's various stalls from different Leo Club selling at the bazaar at Penang Times Square.

Leo from different club and other states came to support the event so do local Penangite. This is an event to create awareness about green environment to the people around.

Our club participated in the bazaar and also the parade, sold stuffs like handphone accessories, toys and more. Besides that, there were food and game stalls. Many Leo enjoyed themselves at there throughout the weekend.

There's also activity like Children Talent Show and also street dance competition. Many locals came and join the competition to show of their talent and won prizes. It's an entertaining weekend at the Penang Times Square.

Our club president, Leo Vincent Khor who are currently studying in Malacca state came back that day purposely to attend this event. It was a wonderful weekend and it's another milestone for our Leo Club. =)

Christmas Eve Countdown at Yun Ni's Place

On the Christmas Eve of 2010, our lovely club member Leo Yun Ni organized a Christmas countdown celebration and gift exchange party at her place at Ivory Plaza. Some members attended this event and countdown for the Christmas Eve together.

It's nice to see people gather around, chit chat and socialize around as social event is part of Leo's definition.

They have BBQ, some little games and also gift exchange among the Leo friends and non-Leo friends who have attended.

The requirement for gift exchange is gift worth of RM15 only. So many different gift were brought by them that night and everyone was happy.

Once again, I want to wish you all have a merry christmas and happy new year! =)

Passed By Rev-Up Exam Week Event by Leo Club of Taylor's University

Leo Club of Taylor's University recently have a Rev-Up Exam Week event right in the campus of the Taylor's University. Leo from Taylor's University gives out free 7UP Revive beverage and also lucky draw coupon to students who are having exam at the university and at the same time is a charity event where they asked for donation.

I as a representative of Leo Club of Penang (City) managed check-out the booth for a while and have a little chat with the Leo at there. Leo Club of Taylor's University is a new Omega category Leo Club which is formed lately and the president is Leo Pin Pheng.

It's good to be a Leo and is able to interact with Leos of other club no matter where you are. =) Roar.

Joint Deepavali Celebration at Shan's Children Home

Leo Club of Penang (City) had jointly successfully organized another meaningful community service project with New Century Lions Club of Penang Island and Lions Club of Tawau Cosmo, Sabah last Saturday. We had celebrated Deepavali, the festival of lights with a bunch of Hindu children from Shan's Children Home, Mount Erskine, Penang. Deepavali or the Festival of lights is an important festival in the Hindu calendar. The whole celebration last for almost a week. There will be a lot of oil lamps during this celebration. The Hindus light oil lamps in a row of earthenware lamps outside their dwellings to usher in peace and prosperity into their homes and surroundings.

Leo Ying Ting, who was the Co-Organizing Chairperson had planned a series of entertainments for the children. Other than hosting the lunch, we had also prepared games and some performances for the children too. A birthday celebration for the November babies was carried out at the end of the project. The children had also received the "purple" packet from the Lions as well as a bag of gift from the organizers too. We were very honour to have YB Koay Teng Hai, the assemblyman for Pulau Tikus State constituency to join us as the guest of honur. The Lions dignitaries who had taken out their precious time to join us in this meaningful inter district joint project were VDG1 Shawn Lee, VDG2 Tan Swee Kok, ZC Alan Cheah, RCC for Leos R1 Ong Lai Penag and DVP1 Kok Sheng. Thank you for your support. We are very sure that the children have had an enjoyable time with us. Special thanks to OC Ying Ting, VP Him Keat, Trea. Min Xiang, Alfred Lim, Wallace Mak, Sammy Saw and PP Stanley Saw for working together to make this project a success one. Roar~

The Joshua Tapes Special Screening

The Leo Club scene is not only about wonderful youth and brilliant high school students working out on charity activities and social events. There's also an interaction between the young and the profession working adult Lion for both work and entertainment.

Our club were invited by Lions Club of Ipoh Metro New Century to a special screening of The Joshua Tapes which features our celebrity Lion, Lion Baki Zainal who is one of the main character in the local film.

Leo Nicholas Chan and Leo Jonathan who are currently based in Kuala Lumpur attended the event at Golden Screen Cinema, 1Utama. It's a special screening especially for Leo.

The film is a good local production which story about 3 best friends going on a road trip to the East Coast. It's kinda nice local film and worth a watch if you are a film lover.

Anyway, gonna thanks District Chairperson, Lion Alan Thoo of Lions Club of Ipoh Metro New Century for the invites and the free meal by Glitters Cafe. =)

MAD ECO Parade on Leo Day 2010

Leo Day 2010 is back with M.A.D. ECO Parade. It's not really mad, it's actually stands for Make A Difference. This year's Leo Day 2010 is back with bigger, better and a massive parade with a green theme. Everything will be about the environment just like Go Green.

The parade is a series of activities, including colouring competition for the kids, activities, games and also the main activity which is the ECO Costume Competition. Each Leo Club has to dress up in a ECO costume and whoever has the best costume designed will win away wonderful prizes.

Joint visit to Rumah Orang Asli @ Cameron Highland

The Orang Asli are the indigenous people who dwell in the forest of Peninsular Malaysia. Literally, Orang asli is Original People. Leo Club of Penang (City) and Leo Club of Tanjung Penang had organised a visit to Rumah Orang Asli at Cameron Highland to better understand how's their life. It is incorrect to assume that those Orang asli live isolated from the world. They used solar energy to generate power supply and they even have Astro installed in their house.

Some of us were hoping to see them in forest attire was certainly a great disappointment. They are actaully in modem attire too unlike olden days. Due to the development, Malaysian Government has allocated a new place and built 42 houses for the people who previously living in the forest. They are now living in the house with 3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. In fact, their living is improving. We were there not only paying a visit but also to distribute some daily necessities to the residents especially the kids. Special thanks to Lions Club of Cameron Highland for the special arrangement. We are glad that to know more about the living of "orang asli" in Malaysia. Roarrr~ The members presence were Him Keat, Kok Sheng, Min Xiang, Zi-Qian, Kah Sing, Sammy..

Penang WalK for Sight on 101010

10-10-10 is one of the best day ever that happen only once for every 100 years. In conjunction with World Sight Day, members from Leo Club of Penang (City) had taken part in the Region 1, 2 and 3 Charity Walk for Sight this morning at Padang Polo Penang, Malaysia. Vice President Him Keat, Treasurer Min Xiang, Asst. Secretary Edwin Khor, Past President Kok Sheng, Daniel Khor and William Chan were one of the participants for the walk. The whole journey is about 3km which allowed the participant to experience blindness at the same time help to raise needed funds by St. Nicholas’ Home, Penang to help the visually impaired. Thanks to the members who had spent their Sunday Morning for Charity. We appreciated your commitment as a Leo!!

"Give Us A Smile" Fun Fair Outings with Children is one of our club Serving Together with with Lions Club projects. We had hosted 20 children from Children Protection Society Penang on 10th September 2010 for dinner at McD Queensbay Mall and also for Euro Fun Park too. This project was jointly organised with sponsoring Lions Club, Lions Club of Penang (Host), New Century Lions Club of Penang Island, Leo Club of Chung Ling High School and Leo Club of SMJK Convent Dato Keramat. Each member was assigned to look after a kid. Every kid allowed to play any games in the fun park with the tokens that we had given to them. The happiness of the children were clearly shown on their face. We strongly believe they had a fun time with us. Special thanks to Organizing Chairperson Minz Tioh! ROARRR

Visit to Lions Reading Room in Kulim

It was an awesome journey to Kulim, Kedah this morning to attend Leo Club of Chio Min High School's Leo Garden Opening Ceremony and Farewell Party. Our club had sent 3 representatives namely IPP Stanley Saw, PP Kok Sheng and Leo Minz Tiow to give our support to the organizing club. The trip was not merely attending Chio Min's Leo Garden Opening Ceremony but we were glad to be invited to visit Lions Club of Kulim's Initiative- Lions Reading Room too. Few days before, we were informed that they will bring us to visit Lions Reading Room and requested us to collect old English Story books for the centre. However, due to time limitation the members were not able to collect those required books from friends before the visit.

Since we are not able to collect it on time, our President Vincent Khor and his key board of directors had agreed to make a donation of RM 100 to Lions Reading Room in support of thier operating fund. The centre was established in year 1998 by Lion Patricia (in picture) from Lions Club of Kulim with the purpose of providing FREE tuition to the children that come from poor family/urban area and orphanage home. As at today, the centre has 40 students from Standard 1 to Form 3 and 6 Volunteer teachers to help in running the centre. Although the amount of donation is not big but we strongly believe that the donation will be able to make a difference no matter it is big or small! Joint Donation of RM 500 to Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh

Leo Club of Penang (City) together with Lions Club of Penang (Host), NCLC of Penang Island, Leo Club of Chung Ling High School and Leo Club of SMJK Convent Dato Keramat had donated RM 500 to Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh during our recent held Region 1 Leo Clubs Joint Installation @ Chung Ling High School in support of thier dialy operating fund. PP Kok Sheng presented the mock cheque on behalf of the 5 clubs to the Representative from the home, Ms Leong and witnessed by YB Koay Teng Hai, VDG1 Shawn Lee, RCC Ong Lai Peng and President of NCLC of Pennag Island. We did the same last December too. RM 1000 was raised thru an auction in aid Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Yee Ran Jing Sheh, a home for handicapped chidlren in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. Hopefully we can raise more in support to this home next year! ROARRRR

"1 GREEN MALAYSIA" Recycling Items Design Contest!!

Leo Clubs of Penang (City), Chung Ling High School and Convent Datuk Keramat are jointly organizing a Recycling Item Design Contest with the theme of "1 GREEN MALAYSIA" on 29th August 2010 at Penang Times Square with the support from YOUTH JAM'10.

Other than the design contest, we will have some exhibition during the contest and also auction session after the contest.

Let's talk about the Recycling Item Design Contest, the details of the contest is as below:-

Date: 29th August 2010
Time: 1pm - 6pm
Venue: Penang Times Square
Admission: RM15 per group (2 - 4 persons)

Term of Entry:

The participants must register for participation before 12pm on the day of contest.
The contest is open to public. The organizing committee is not allowed to participate in the contest.
Participants are required to use recycling materials e.g. bottles, aluminum tin can, newspaper, paper box, old clothing, old damaged computers & parts; then design and transform them into a creative product or household product related to Malaysia and MERDEKA. You can build a 1 Malaysia logo, a penholder with KL/ Twin Tower on it etc, depends on your creativity.
The contest is conducted in groups: each group consists of 2 - 4 people. Registration Fee for each group is RM15.
All entries must be completed within 3 hours time frame. All entries could be colored.
Plagiarisms are strictly forbidden.
The organizing committee reserves the right to carry out an auction. Proceeds will be taken as donation for charity purposes.
The judging panel members have final decision on the result of the contest.
The organizing committee team has the right to make any amendment on the rules and regulation of the contest.

DVP Ch'ng Kok Sheng, Leo Teoh Him Keat and Leo Kwang Min Xiang were visited Leo Club of Union High School's Effective Micro-organism Mud-Ball Making Project together with Leo Jocelyn Yew and Leo Cindy Teh from Leo Club of Tanjung(Penang) on the 31st July 2010 at their school.

The purpose of organized this project is to prepare the Mud-Balls for a coming event on this Sunday(8th August 2010).

There will be an EM Mud-Ball throwing ceremony, an initial 200k EM Mud-Balls will be throw into Gurney Drive beachfront and hope it will get back to the beauty of our beloved icon in a few months time.

What is EM(Effective Microorganisms)?

Effective Microorganisms, or EM is one of the most popular microbial technologies being used worldwide now. EM was first discovered by Dr. Teruo Higa, professor of horticulture at the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan and it's products have been on the market since 1983.

By now EM is produced in over 54 countries and consists of naturally-occurring beneficial microorganisms. These microorganisms can easily be classified into three major groups: lactic acid bacteria (commonly found in dairy products), yeast (e.g. bread, beer), and phototrophic bacteria.

The use of Effective Microorganisms Technology has broadened in the last two decades from agriculture to water treatment, odour control, animal husbandry, human health, and numerous other industrial treatments.

Research has shown that the inoculation of EM cultures to the soil/plant ecosystem can improve soil quality, soil health, and the growth, yield, and quality of crops. Also when used in animal systems similar benefits have been shown. These microorganisms have a reviving action on growing systems and are completely safe to use.

A number of these microorganisms have long been familiar to the medical sector and the foods industry and are extremely useful for people, animals, plants, the soil and water. Naturally, EM Effective Microorganisms are not genetically engineered. Over the years, the completely harmless and safe nature of EM has been confirmed during a range of research both in Japan and other countries.

In general there are three types of microorganisms:

* Decomposing/degenerative microorganisms
* Opportunistic/neutral microorganisms
* Constructive/regenerative microorganisms

EM (Effective Microorganisms) belongs to the regenerative category. They can prevent decomposition in any type of substance and thus maintain the health of both living organisms and the environment.

Degenerative microorganisms behave in a manner that is diametrically opposite to that of the regenerative group.

The opportunistic/neutral microorganisms constitute the largest category. They follow the group which dominates in a system (See illustration below for a better understanding).

Therefore, when a milieu is created in which regenerative microorganisms prevail, the opportunistic microorganisms follow the constructive processes. Accordingly, the use of EM opens up completely new dimensions in many areas of our day-to-day existence. EM influences the microbial world in a way that ensures that regenerative microorganisms predominate. An environment is created in which by means of fermentation, microorganisms play a positive role with regard to plant growth and quality and soil fertility. Fermentation is stimulated with the result that decomposition disappears, i.e. soil is created in which regenerative microorganisms prevail, leading to optimum results, the prevention of disease and the production of high-quality products.

The employment of EM has met with an extremely positive echo among both conventional and organic farmers. EM cuts fertiliser costs and in the course of time also reduces the volume of weeds. As EM effective microorganisms work largely in the anaerobic sector and they are especially effective in areas where problems such as putrefaction, mal odours and sludging occur.

Effective Microorganisms are utilised in arable farming, vegetable production, fruit farming and viniculture. EM in ponds, biotopes and fish breeding waters bring both an improvement in water quality and sludge degrading. The microorganisms in EM are able to convert the decomposing material derived from the settling of organic matter such as leaves, algae, pollen, seeds, fish food, etc. This optimises the water quality and furnishes an excellent environment for fish breeding.

CNY Canned Food Collection and Donation to Rumah Charis Relau 2010

On 28 February 2010, Leo Club of Penang (City) had successfully organised thier annual CNY Canned Food Collection Project @ Taman Free School with Leo Club of Chung Ling High School and CDK. This project was led by Leo Alfred Lim Shang Yi with the support from club members as well as Leos from CLHS, CDK , UHS and PCGHS. Also present in this project were DC for Leo Club Lion Alan Thoo, RCC for Leo Club Region 1 Lion Ong Lai Peng, Advisor Lion Teh Tien Nan and District Vice Leo President DVP Ch'ng Kok Sheng. The collected doantions such as Canned Food, Rice, Noodles, Bihun, Biscuits etc. were then sent to Rumah Charis Relau. We made a cash donation of RM 100 and DVP Kok Sheng also distributed 50 red packets to the home residents and volunteer helpers too. Last but not least, billion thanks to all the members for taking out time off to help in this meaningful project.

District Community Service Project - Picnic with the Kids

Exultant roars, we really heard it from the kids, Leos and Lions.

Leo Ng Zi Qin took up the challenge posed by District Chairperson for Leo Clubs, Lion Alan Thoo to organize a District Community Service Project - Picnic with the Kids with only a week of timeline. It needed a lot of perseverance and strong mentality to clear all the hurdles and stumbling blocks.

It was a District Community Service Project jointly organized by Leo Club of Penang (City) from Region 1 and Leo Club of Anderson High School from Region 4 on the 7th December 2009. We had a tough time in searching for a suitable charity home as in December; most of the kids are either back to relatives' house or are on holidays. Leo Ng went to a number of homes, viz: Children's Protection Society which was left with only six kids, Salvation Army which was left with only 10 kids. So the initial plan of cooking for them and doing some cleaning up was sidelined temporarily till he found the Ramakrishna Ashrama.

He thought a solution was finally found, but yet another issue popped up. They do not allow cooking in their kitchen and the kids are vegetarian in the home. We were left with only two options, viz:

1. To bring our own cooking utensils and prepare the food at the open space outside.

2. To bring them out for a picnic where they do not have to be vegetarian.

On that day, Leo Teoh Shaw Jhee and Leo Ng Zi Qin went to the Sungai Nibong bus station to fetch the Leos from Leo Club of Petaling Jaya Integrity, Region 5 - Beatrice Chan, Wai Yew, Justin Yap, Chuo Tong and Eric Teh.

We reached Paradise Beach at around 1.45 pm, a bit later than as scheduled. The leos from Leo Club of Penang (City) were already there at 1.30 pm sharp. I was told that the Leos from Leo Club of Anderson High School could not even see their shadows. And this instigated some controversies over the promise on the time of arrival.

We then searched for a place to put down the food, mats and other stuffs. After placing the food properly, we kicked off the briefing on the events, mainly on the games. Leo Boney and Leo Teoh Shaw Jhee were the in charge for the games; they gave the instructions to the Leos who were willing to shoulder the responsibility.

Well, thanks to Leo Scott Ong for picking up the Leos from Leo Club of Penang Chinese Girls' High School and taking the pizzas. We started to prepare the sites for the games by clearing up the rubbish especially broken glasses, and waited patiently till around 3.15 pm - the arrival of the kids from the Ramakrishna Ashrama.

I avowed that it was a big disappointment when I learnt that there were only 19 kids left and 2 supervisors that came along. Nothing could be done; as most of them went home (I only came to know that they are not orphans, rather of single-parent family). Everything had to proceed as planned.

Continuing about the programme, we split the kids and Leos into four groups. We had a little tough time in dealing with the younger kids. They had the urge to bathe themselves in the sea! It was understandable as they only get to roam around the beach, perhaps only two times per year? But we did not have the licence to grant them their wish as the incident of James has certainly feared us.

The first game was brainstormed by Leo Teoh and Leo Ng - Epic Derby. It was an endurance test. The game encompassed four parts, viz:

1. First part: using a plastic spoon to garner the sea water to fill up the bottle to a certain level.

2. Second part: after the first part is cleared, the team members have to bond the string with each other's leg and walk to a piece of newspaper. The following pair will proceed with the aforesaid procedure and walk to a smaller piece of newspaper.

3. Third part: once all the pairs in the group are done, they have to stand on the newspaper provided without falling down for five seconds. If any of them were to fall, the whole group has to start from the beginning of the second part.

4. Forth part: now they have to complete the final task by forming the word "Energize" by lying down.

The quickest group that accomplishes the four tasks is considered the winner. During the game, we were amazed to have seen a few tricks and wiles played by the kids. The kids are just like us, having lots of unseen vim and endowment. If and only if they are being cultured with the right values, they would definitely be an asset to the country in close future. Then, they had some noodles and fried prawns done by Shaw Jhee's mum.

The second game resumed after the short break. The second game was invented by Leo Boney - Capture the Flags. I personally liked this game, requiring strategies and teamwork. It was a little messy due to the gigantic number of people in a match. Nevertheless, the kids were still ecstatic with it! The second break followed with pizzas and fried chicken. The kids were given the priority in having the pizza first, only the left over were distributed to the Lions and Leos.

The third game - Dragon Chasing Tail was directed by the Leos from Leo Club of Anderson High School (I am not so sure about the detailed rules of the game). Roughly, it was about Dragon' head has to capture another Dragon's tail. It was already six something when the last game ended. The kids were given a box of dessert, comprising a variety of cakes. Due to the sudden low turnout, each of them took one extra box of dessert back home. The eating session was adjourned with jellies.

Before they embarked on the bus, we presented the daily needs sponsored by District Chairperson for Leo Clubs, Lion Alan Thoo to the supervisors and took some photos with them. When I was carrying the daily needs together with them, I felt contented with all the efforts planted, in exchange of "Brother, thanks a lot". It meant more than you could see.

The blissful smiles were seen. And more importantly, we heard the exultant roars, not only from the Leos, but from those kids too. It may serve as a launching pad for them to follow our footsteps to render help to the needy in future!

Leo District 308 B2 is now officially formed

After years of waiting and months of preparing, finally the Leo District 308 B2 is now officially formed on 19 December 2009 in Herritage Hotel, Ipoh. The day marks another historical moment in Lions Clubs International District 308 B2, Malaysia. The 1st ever Leo District 308 B2 is led by DP Eliza Chia from Leo Club of Ipoh Unity. To align with Lions Cabinet, the Leo District Officers are therefore named as Leo Cabinet Officers instead of Leo Council Officers which is used around the world.

AS one of the omega Leo Clubs in District 308 B2, Leo Club of Penang (City) has appointed our PP Ch'ng Kok Sheng and PP Fiona Lee to represent the club in the Leo District. PP Ch'ng has been appointed by Leo District as 1st District Vice President (DVP1) whereas PP Fiona as District Leo Chairperson for Community Service and Fellowship (DLC).

Leo Club of Penang (City) has organised a visit to Yee Ran Jing Sheh Handicapped Children's Home , Bukit Mertajam yesterday. We were not only visiting the home but giving a donation of RM 1000 which consisted of RM 800 raised during last month's GO GREEN Project and another RM 200 from President Stanley Saw to the home in support of thier daily expenses. Some daily neccesities were bought and donated to the home too. This was our 2nd visit in year 2009. Another fruitful trip by Leo Club of Penang (City) in this festive season. RCC for Leo- Lion Ong Lai Peng, 1st Vice District Leo President Ch'ng Kok Sheng and District Leo Chairperson for Community Service and Fellowship Fiona Lee were also there to witness this meanungful project too. Last but least, thanks to all members who joined us for the visit and not to forget our donors too.

Go Green Starts From Your Home- Recycling Items Design Competition

LEO CLUB OF PENANG (CITY) is organizing an Environemntal Awareness Campaign with theme "Go Green Starts From Your Home" on 21st November 2009 @ Queensbay Mall, Penang with the support from Malaysian Celebrities Go Green.

A series of activities are planned for this campaign. They are:-

Recycling Items Design Competition.
Exhibitions by Jabatan Perhilitan Pulau Pinang & New Century Lions Club of Penang Island
Collecting Recyclable Items from Public
Meet Celebrity Judges from Malaysian Celebrities Go Green, Baki Zainal & Azizi Zakaria

Let's talk about the Recycling Items Design Competition, the details of the competition is as below:-

Date: 21st November 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 1pm (Registration), 2pm to 5pm (Competition)
Venue: Queensbay Mall, North Zone, Level 1 (Right in front of Maybank)
Admission: RM 20 (2 to 4 persons)

Term of Entry:

participant must register for participation before 1p.m. on the day of competition.
The competition is open to public. The organizing team members are not allowed to participate in the competition.
Participants are required to use recycle material such as, bottle, old clothing, and damaged item and transform them into useful household furniture and ornament. For example: furniture, closet, aquarium, piggy bank, clock, shoe rack, curtain and so on.
The competition is conducted in groups; each group consists of 2 to 4 people. Registration fee for each group is RM20.
All entries must be completed within the 3 hours time frame. All entries could be colored.
Upon completion all group are given 3 minutes to make a brief presentation regarding their work of art. Participants could choose among Chinese or English as medium.
Plagiarisms are strictly forbidden.
The organizing committee reserves the right to carry out an auction. Proceeds will be taken as donation for charity purposes. No objections should be made.
The judging panel members have final decision on the result of the contest.
The organizing team has the right to make any amendment on the rules and regulation of the competition.

International Coastal Cleaup Project 2009 @ Teluk Kumbar

On 26 September 2009, we had particpated in the International Coastal Cleaup Project 2009 @ Teluk Kumbar organised by CEMACS, USM. Region 1 Leos and Lions were invited to be one of the participating NGOs. Of course, Leo Club of Penang (City) was one of them. For Leo Club, Leo Vincent Khor has taken the initiative to lead the Region 1 Leos in this cleanup campaign whereas RCC Ong Lai Peng leads the Region 1 Lions.

We had sent 12 members to participate in this clean up project. They were Edwin Tan, Daniel Khor, Tict Chyuan, Victor, Jameson, President Stanley, PP Kok Sheng, Roxanne, Sammy, Min Xiang, Him Keat and OC Vincent Khor. DG Choong, 1st VDH Hudson, 2nd VDG Shawn, DC for Leo Ln Allan Thoo were there to join us for this meaningful project too.

This project was carried out successfully. For detail report, stay tune and OC Vincent will briefly report what was going on during the project. Let's Go Green together~

8th of August 2009 was another day where the Lions from Sponsoring Lions Club of Penang (Host) had a joint fellowship project- Team Building and Hiking to Muka Head with thier sponsored Leo Clubs: Penang (City), CDK and CLHS at The Penang National Park (Muka Head). It was a rainy day in the early morning. Fortunately, the rain stops as they reached gurney and the plan carried on. Everyone boarded the bus and off they headed to the entrance - The Penang National Park.

The members who participated in this fellowship were President Stanley Saw, PP Fiona Lee, Roxanne Tan, Him Keat, Wallace Mak, Scott Ong and soon-to-be new members: Sammy Saw (Outgoing member of UHS), Jessmine and Froggy (Outgoing BOD of CDK).

Everyone was separated into 4 groups, with 4 person in each. All groups are assigned with a map, question papers to complete filled with questions regarding everything you walk past and what you see in order to go through every checkpoint along the hike up to USM beach. After going through 3 checkpoints everyone gets to rest and have our lunch.Their next station will be the USM beach, and thier next mission is to catch 5 crabs, 2 siput, 2 ants, and 1 spider or 2 fishes.

After that everyone carried on the journey through the slightly tougher and rockier path towards our final destination , Muka Head. Our HERO Wallace Mak slipped on the slippery rock and injured his knee and elbow though.Upon reaching, they were assigned with another mission, is to build something with 2 bamboos and an empty container which is given that could float 2 person without sinking.

After finishing our creative masterpiece, everyone were to test it in the real water. Of course, there were some failed and some succeed.

The above picture showing the failed one! In the end of it, our lion president - Lion Simon Kheng, talks about why some failed, because we need to unite in order to success, so, from the start, everyone is supposed to fail just to proves that combining every bamboo will ensure a rakit that will float for sure. After that, everyone's required to combine every piece to create a bigger rakit. As a reward, everyone of them gets a ride on the banana boat!

Everyone in the banana boat fell into the sea, and our club super HERO- Wallace Mak was so brave and bold, he swam and saved Patrick (CLHS Leo) !And he earned himself so many admirers for his bravery act after that! Perhaps, he won someone's heart at the same time too. We don't know, only he knows about it. :) For more details story on this outing, kindly pay a visit to this blog by PP Fiona Lee. There were some other incidents happened too but due to I was not there to scream for "HELP" and got my self DARK and RED plus I'm referring to his blog to blog about this outing. :)They actually had the same terrifying journey back to the shore too so for more information, please log on to this blog.

Before they headed back to Gurney Drive, they managed to take a group shot showing how interesting the outing was to all of us! They smiled even thought there was some minor "incident" happended during the trip but they managed to solve it and i would like to say: "Wallace, we feel proud of you!!!. You are our Hero". :P

Farewell for Leo Jocelyn Lee

Supposely, there was a farewell dinner for our member Leo Jocelyn on 6th of July 2009 at Atawoo Thai Restaurant. Unfortunately, she can't make it for the last minute. End up, we had our fellowship dinner with own members who present. Penang (City) used to have a lot of fellowship among its own members. Among the fellowship activities are lunch, dinner, supper or movie. This is one way to get ourselves closer to each other. I understand that there are not much members join us for movie and so on. Most of the time are those members who have the same interest that is Movie!

Let's come back to the farewell. Althought Jocelyn can't make it for the dinner but we also paid a visit to her house after the dinner. Just an hour gathering and bid farewell to her. She served us with Starwberries and prawn crackers when we were there. Other than chit chatting, we did camwhore too. :) By the way, Leo Jocelyn is now studying in Australia pursuing her degree. Hope to see her in Penang soon so that she can join us for all our wonderful Leo activities. All the best and good luck from your Leo pals in Penang!

On 2nd of August 2009, I was invited by my former Vice President Johnny Loo to his wedding dinner. I met a lot of our Leo Club of Penang (City) old members as well as Past Presidents. Together with me were Leo Cynthia Poo and PP Fiona Lee who were invited by our former Leo Secretary Billy Loo. The wedding was held in Moral Uplifting Society.

Among the Past presidents I met in this dinner were PP Ong Lai Peng,PP Gordon Lee, PP Yvonne Tang, PP Ch'ng Ley Ming, PP Micheal, PP Fiona Lee, and myself PP Kok Sheng. So in total we have 7 PPs in the dinner. The old members were Former Elected President Tan Chee Wooi, Former Treasurer Tan Kang Leng, Former Vice President Hoong Ling Tze, and... Imight miss out some who I not really know their names.

Other than our own club old members, I did meet a few former alpha leos of mine too. It was great actually to meet up with so much friends especially in our Leo-Leo family. No matter you are Leo/Lion now or not. Once you were apart of us, we will be friends forever! Johnny, Happy Wedding and all the best from all of us!!!

After paying a visit to Beautiful Gate Home for the Disabled, we visited DG Choong Kwai Loi at Grand Kampar Hotel. He was glad to meet us right in front of the Hotel. First of all, on behalf of Leo Club of Penang (City), we would like to congratulate DG Choong Kwai Loi on his inauguration which we were not able to attend due to personal matter.

A visit to Beautiful Gate Home for Disabled, Kampar

On 1st of August 2009, Leo Club of Penang (City) had successfully jointly organised a Cross Region Community Service Project with SMJK Pei Yuan Kampar and SMK Methodist ACS Kampar ar Beautiful Gate Home for Disabled, Kampar. The whole journey from Penang to Kampar took us about 3 hours. It was a great journey as we had successfully move out of Penang Island to some other place for service. The Organizing Chairperson, Leo Teoh Him Keat said that, this was a great experience as sharing and caring for the needy ones have no boundaries at all. (extracted from DC Alan's blog) I agreed that too. There shouldn't be any boundary to serve the needy but it would be more meaningful if we get the local leos to join us as well. This is what we did for this project... It will be more and more so if you are interested to have one with us, contact our President Stanley. I was told that the next station will be Kedah!!!!

By the way, there are a total of 7 Penang City members namely PP Kok Sheng, PP Fiona, President Stanley Saw, Secretary Roxanne, OC Him Keat, Jameson and Fa Liang. The Lions present in this project were the Cabinet Officers and of course is none other than our very own Region 1 Chairperson, Zone 1 Chairperson, DC-Leo Lion Alan Thoo and RCC-Leo Lion Ong Lai Peng. We were glad to have so many Lions visited this project and thanks for their generousity donation of RM 500+. As a whole, we used the donation to buy some daily necessities (approx.RM240) and cash donation of RM300 to the home. Althought it is not much but it is really fantastic to have every visting lions to suppor this meaningful project! Once again, thank you very much for the support!

After all the visiting Lions gone back, we started our program for the day. What we did? Very simple... we started to understand thme more thru our conversation with the disabled. Myself, I like to start my conversation with "about the home". This is what I do in order for myself to understand the home so that I can talk more related topic with them. There are many branches in Malaysia and Kampar branch plays the role of education. The home provides educational opportunity for those marginalized disabled people especially those who have been deprived of an opportunity to education, and those of the younger age group. If I'm not mistaken, there are 16 persons in the home. There are some volunteers teaching in the home. For more information about the home, you may log on to their website. I see the joy that they have while talking with us, playing table tennis, playing Jenga (not jango ah, ah cheong lol), monopoly deal, paper folding etc.

The project ended with a group photo + donations. Oh ya, i was told that they will be coming to Penang for 1 week for Undang so they need our help on accomodation + transportation. erm... Thinking where can they stay right now... Will discuss further to get some members help... If you are interested to give your helping hands to the needy... do let me know. She will contact me for further arrangement. I will be looking for $ from Lion to provide them free accomodation perhaps.... So lions who are reading this.... please sek chou abit ah :) Oh ya, not to forget to say thanks to Leos from PJI, Anderson Ipoh, Sam Tet, Methodist ACS and Pei Yuan Kampar for joining us the whole afternon :)

3R Recycling Project – It’s All We’ve Been Envisaging by Penang City

The drizzling rain enforced the fortitude of the Leos which has been the missing element for the past few years. It was a test of mentality, indirectly. It tested the perseverance – whether to continue the 3R Recycling Project or not. The Leos amassed at the playground opposite to Heng Ee High School.

The Organizing Chairperson, Leo Ng Zi Qin had to ask them to move into the coffee shop beside to brief them about the groupings and tasks to be done during the activity. Since there were around 10 Leos from each club, he divided them into 5 groups. Each group composed of 2 to 3 members from each club respectively.

Prior to the collection, Leo Ng Zi Qin told them the two main objectives of the project, viz:

1. To promote the concept of going green, in which this is in line with the state government’s aspirations in becoming the First Green State.
2. To be the launching pad to break the ice between the members of 3 different clubs. This is to foster a closer bond between the Leos from the 3 main alpha clubs in Penang and indirectly motivating other clubs. And therefore, it serves as a catalyst to unite the Leos in Region 1!

The Leos only managed to collect old newspapers, aluminium tins, cardboard, plastic bottles and the likes from five blocks. Leo Ng Zi Qin then decided to call the project to a halt due to the heavy downpour. They carried the items from each block to the motor shelter.

Leo Saw Zhang Hao, Leo Daniel Khor, Leo Scott Ong and Leo Ng Zi Qin then transported the items to the Recycling Centre by their vehicles. The total amount raised is RM 86.70.

3R Recycling Project was always considered as one of the simplest projects to be carried out. Now Leo Ng Zi Qin has identified three major concerns that should always be taken into account, viz:

1. To check the availability of lorry transport or Recycling centres.
2. To get permission from MPPP to paste the notices around.
3. To surf the net to survey the weather forecast for the day of project.

The money raised was donated to Handicapped Children’s Centre Penang on 13th July 2009, Monday.

Visit to the Elderly Sisters of Infant Jesus Home @ Balik Pulau by Penang (City)

On 5th July 2009, Leo Club of Penang (City) had a joint lunch visit to the home for elderly Sisters of Infant Jesus Home @ Balik Pulau, Penang with Lions Club of Georgetown Perdana. Other than the members from Lions Club of Georgetown Perdana, the present were President Stanley Saw, Secretary Roxanne Tan, Leo Wallace Mak and Leo Zi Qin. And not forgetting the RCC for Leo Club, Lion Ong Lai Peng attended too. Basically, we had out lunch together with the old folks and chit-chatted with them.

The Lions Club of Georgetown Perdana managed to invite a band from one of the renowned hotels to perform there. Since the target audience was the old folks, the songs performed were of the 1960s and 1970s. The Lions danced to the tune. Retro dances were not our speciality. Somehow, President Stanley, Leo Wallace and Leo Zi Qin simply danced as if we were ambling.

Having fun and lunch together with the residents of the home was just great. We spent the whole afternoon in the home, sharing our love and care to the elderly. The home was suddenly bursting with laughter just becuase of us who bring them the joy and happiness in this beautiful Sunday. Apart from all these laughter, it was sweet to see the smiley faces of the elderly. Great right? They will not feel lonely with our presence. :P May god bless all of you and hope to visit you all again!

Walk for Sight Charity Walk 2009

In conjunction with Lions 50 Years of community Services in Malaysia, "Walk for Sight" Charity Walk 2009 was jointly organized by Region 1 Lions Clubs & Leo Club & St. Nicholas' Home in partnership with Majlis Sukan Negeri Pulau Pinang on the 27th of June 2009.

Leo Club of Penang City is no way a left-behind and is part of the organizer of this first ever "blindfolded" walk organized for the sighted in Penang. Our camera forces were loaded with their gadgets and all buckled up to capture the very moment of a grandeur scene of thousands experiencing a world of a visually impaired, the very first time in Penang.

Highlights for the day were,
Having the participants to walk in pairs, with one being blindfolded and led by another, thus giving the sighted the opportunity to experience blindness, to value sight and to appreciate teamwork, to have fun and of course raise the much needed funds for St Nicholas' Home to help the visually impaired. Other events such as, entertainments and to excite the crowd a little - Lucky Draws! =) Oh, there is a corner collecting old glasses for recycling too.

The event took place in Padang Polo, by eight in the morning strings of people started turning up ,as more crowds of young and old congregated at the field, warm-up exercises and demonstrations of the dos and don'ts while leading the visually impaired were carried out led by an experienced trainer.

The walk encompasses a distance as far as 2.3 kilometers from Padang Polo, passing through Disted-Stanford College, Penang General Hospital, and back to Padang Polo. The streets encircled the area were flooded with participants during the walk.

It was indeed a joyous scene,having people of all ages joining the walk and given their support.

Of course, not forgetting our very own Leo club of Penang City's members.

A cup of oh-so-satisfying thirst quenching VICO,

And a warm hearty massage by the St Nicholas' masseurs

Are you kidding me?

Upon a mere 2.3km walk and everyone gets a massage!!
Just look at how wonderful our life is, and count our very own luck as a real visually impaired have to walk all their life summing up a total of 1000000000000times of 2.3 km, YET they don't get a massage for every kilometers they go. Put your hands on your heart and ask yourself if you're one lucky child.
